I saw this contraption at the Farnborough Airshow back in the late 80s when it was first launched. The thi ng that really stuck in my mind was the takeoff: u nladen and with minimum fuel , the takeoff speed’s about 5mph. I t ambled down the taxiway, turned onto the runway, taxie d some more, and then you noticed it was 100ft in the air and the gear was going up, with about 80% of the runway still available . No noticeable acceleration, no noticeable rotate: i t was the weirdest thing to see. The effect’s less obvious in the vid - wonder if it’s a pers pective thing or if this one’s got some load on board.

Power/empty weight is really impressive.

my parents were flying home at the end of march from LA to boston, less than 1/4 full, average tailwind. Th e pilot came on the radio that they were able to shave off 30 minutes and his fastest trip ever.

Yup, these heavies are mostly fuel and payload, so take that away and you’ve got an overgrown fighter jet . Just like you should never try to out-accelerate a  tractor rig that’s not towing its trailer .
